Fortunately, my Asian parents aren’t this downright racist. But I find it so funny how they all react in similar ways when they get caught in their own contradictions. It’s incredibly nice and relieving to see these I’m Not The Step Dad I’m Just The Dad That Stepped Up Shirt. I don’t know if I’d say it was “effective”. It didn’t prove anything. OP’s parents aren’t ignorant to the fact that they are racist. They know! All those lines about “culture” are not said because the parents think they are true. They are said because they want to convince OP to be on their side. And not be in a relationship with a dark-skinned person. All but the most socially incapable racists do this. Something they think is more palatable to the non-racist they’re speaking to. When they’re talking to people they know don’t share their racist views. They’ll try to couch their racism in fluffy lies that make their actions about something other than race. Obviously this is still an NTA. OP’s family reaction makes them the only assholes here. I just don’t think OP got quite the I’m Not The Step Dad I’m Just The Dad That Stepped Up Shirt. Personally, I would’ve felt bad just because OP “held on” to that prank for 2 whole weeks, especially during these times. Agreed, did they really hold onto the prank for two weeks? or did their parents act irrationally and not reach out for 2 weeks. I would hope during that time if J felt uncomfortable they would communicate and end the prank.
